Sour Grapes

http://helloji.wordpress.com/2008/03/05/iit-insufferable-indian-tribe/

This post is in response to the above post.

Though I am not technically in an IIT but I did cleared JEE and am proud of it. And am also very proud to be in IT-BHU which has been admitting students since long from IIT-JEE. So I would sure like to give out the true meaning of IIT.
First of all clearing JEE is a difficult and I and all the others are proud of it. To get selected in top 5000-6000 students out of over 2 lakh students is no mean task. So its not surprising for a freshman to point this out to everyone he meets. It may seem arrogance to others but thats simply excitement of that guy. And from what I have observed this behavior hardly continues after 1st year.
Secondly every college (and I mean it every college) has its college T-shirt. Now the frequency with which one wears it depends upon how proud you are of your college. Just like you see many employees wearing Google T-shirt but hardly anyone of some local company (even if they have their own shirt). I don't think thats arrogance.
Next, ragging. Now thats a question that is troubling every society. Yes I know its bad habit but its everywhere in form of bullying etc. So its not just trademark of IIT. Every college suffers from it.
Next the tribal names you are calling is actually lobby names. These names are based on some habit or peculiarity of a person and I doubt if anyone minds being called by his lobby name. You see even at homes everyone has a second name. Now thats not being tribal. As for using those names outside IIT, thats perfectly normal. Relatives at any family function outside your home call you by ones home name. Now thats not tribal behavior. And if two school friends meet afterwards in life then they do talk about school only. Cause people talk about common interests. Two Indians in any foreign country will talk about India. Thats human behavior. You cant help it.
Next AIR. That too is only observed in 1st year where a person is filled with excitement and sense of achievement of clearing JEE (and he should be). So to call a person whose excited as arrogant is being too harsh on him.
Now about gals. Now this is a topic anyone who has been in IIT would like to speak in detail. Yes girls are a rarity in IIT. Am not gender biased or anything but its the truth. And stammering and etc it happens to everyone who has not been in co-ed school since beginning. Even I was a bit shy when i shifted from boys school to co-ed school. So for guys who have always been in boys school and they find no change of scenario in college (that is hardly any girl in your class) its normal for them to be shy in front of outside girls. Cause usually in other colleges people "get used to gals" within 1st year itself. But thats not so in IIT.
Next thing you are talking about banner. First and foremost the most probable cause of error is because of painter. But lets assume thats not so and an IIT'ian did that. Then I must tell you that English is no prerequisite for getting into IIT. There are many students from Hindi medium in our college. So that mistake may have been made by a person there who has just started learning English language. Thats acceptable I suppose.
Next Pooja and dumping of garbage. These too topics are influenced by our society and not by how much maths you know. Pooja is too embedded in Hindu culture to be taken out by any reasoning. Are all people in West atheist? I am an atheist but don't mind anyone else offering prayers. As for throwing garbage in dump, knowing science doesn't imply a person has civic sense.
Next about brain-drain. Yes I accept its significant but I think its only because of the condition of "high-tech industry" here in India. First of all, all the "high-tech jobs" here in India are filled up so you cant say that people are going outside while jobs are vacant in India. Secondly, for those interested in research, in India there are no options. We all know the state of fundings in all Indian Universities including IIT's. No high-tech research is possible. And lastly again I would say that knowing science does not ensure that a person is patriotic. And why not be global in attitude. Why should we stop at our nations boundaries? And its not that IIT'ians are more eager to go out. Its just that they have more opportunities. Given a chance students from any college would like to go out. And I would like to point out a fact for you. Working hours in a good company are much less than in small companies. So no "life long mind numbing work" need to be done. Life is much easier after getting through college.
And the last thing I want to talk about is is being perfect groom. I agree with you on this topic but cause of different reason. I don't doubt the intelligence of people in IIT but certainly feel that intelligence in science does not ensure common sense, civic sense or for that matter anything else about the personality. I find people here very different from my views. So am sure one of us is wrong (not fighting for who it is). But we are both in IIT. IIT'ians are in demand for arranged marriage only because it means they have a much higher chances of having and retaining stable chance. And how does it affect you when both the person who is demanding IIT'ians and person who is in demand are not having any problem.
Your post does not provide any sort of humor but only shows someones frustration.

I am proud to be in my college and would proudly wear its T-Shirt no matter what anyone thinks about it.

everyone should do that i feel....

  8. @vibhash...
not exactly a problem...just a sad part of our life.. :(
more apt like this.."There's many a slip twixt cup and lip"
or we call it story of the lost 'I'
but now i have no regrets...it was just in initial phase...

this are the fews months for me when i've had lots of free time : 3 months after giving JEE exam . . . i'm going to IIT kanpur starting academic year 2008 ...
and so i find it hard to see how you have so much free time while working. . .
how about posting a *similar* post on the website ( is it wordpress ? ) on which the tribes blog is put-up...

  10. the -ve point I see about this blog entry is that it seems specifically written "against" the writer of the IIT-tribes one blog...
try to make a more general red maybe, then it'd e good to read this on wordpress...

  11. @brio
dude u are coming to IITK rite??
given the chance i would personally rag u... cos dat is not how u speak to a senior... and there are no -ve points to this post (senior is always right).. its one of the golden rules.. u'll get to kow when u come here

  12. well melbin no need to make it a ragging post...le him atleast come to coll..wahan sab samajh mein aa jaayega
    @brio
when you are in coll you do have lots of free time..you'll get to know soon unless you are those types who dont know the world beyond their books.
next i gave the link on wordpress coz i was not interested in spamming such huge replies there.
and finally this post really is a reply to that post only..i dont need to write independantly to keep up the image of iit's..theres no need..
i was just trying to counter all the points put up by the writer there...so if u feel its a -ve point then sry i cant help it..
and some advice for you--better change ur attitude before leaving for coll..it wont help you

  13. why don't u think with an open mind abt the jaded guy post. stop acting like an ostrich. instead of blabbering incoherently, why don't u logically think of points he raised. (though i agree that there are exceptions and gross generalizations should not be made)

U ppl need to show that u are indeed contributing to the development of the nation, and are not selfish...Right now, when u r in the insti, what don't try to improve the insti culture...
e.g...try eradicating the asinine, vulgar, uncivilized ritual called ragging. i hope u believe ragging is wrong....so do u have the courage to do the right thing, and speak up & campaign against ragging ?

and one more thing....u hav given lame justifications for bragging abt the iit tag/jee rank...have u ever heard a word called "humility" ? vulgar show-offs of one's iit bkgnd or for that matter any privileged position one has earned, will always be viewed with disdain. i won't say much...Try to come out as a better human being at the end of 4 yrs...

  14. and...yes...i m an iitian...[i think it is necessary to mention it here categorically...else u and ppl like u may think of me a non-iitian-whiner ], but prefer not to become a victim of myths and tendencies more prevalent among the members of our tribe...

  15. first let me tell u abt thinking like an ostrich I would have never written a word abt iit had it not been for his post which i thought represented just 1-2 indivudials and not the whole of college. So i needed to tell the facts.
    I'l leave raging for last.
next abt bragging abt iit. maybe u have not read the whole post carefully i have just written about the initial excitement of getting into iit. if u didnt have any thhen u must be sort of stoic but initially i was excited and many other people i knew were. But please dont compare initial excitement with bragging and vulgarity and show off. show off is which u keep saying all ur life. there may be few guys like that but there are exceptions always. its very human nature to be happy and thinking about only one thing that u achieved for some time. whatever if u feel its wrong even for some omnths then i dont agree with you.
next ragging. yes i agree tats its the worst thing that could be hapening in college and really makes it look as if some uneducated street people are studying in college instead of people who have studied till 12th. first to the facts pertaning to the post. i just pointed out the fact that ragging is not limited to only iits but happens in all colleges so to bring down only iits name coz of that is not fair.
now the real point. i am not strong nough to campaign and do whatever to permanently abolish it but on a personal level i myself never took part in it but was threatened many times to the point of being beaten physically while trying to save juniors. yes i may not have campaigned but i not only not endorse it ut try to fight against it.
and my post was only a reply to that post...or i dont even need to speak on this subject.

  18. Nice try yaar...

but being a B Tech myself (and I am not bragging...

I think all of it could have been taken in good humor... Everybody of us has made fun of all that once in a while... isn't 'non-males' term famous everywhere...

I guess you are just getting a bit senti... Its ok man... Just try to laugh at it... and it won't seem so offensive...

Maybe its high time, we all learned to laugh at ourselves...

Anyways no points being taken away for writing... continue blogging...

  20. First of all its a very old post so I dont even remember any points so no debates :)
Next it wasnt the post that made me write this. But later in comments the way he kept pushing his point tempted me into this. And I do think that writing another post for him was better than replying there.
